Carmakers respond to PiCG cut by reducing EV prices to beat new cap

Carmakers have been rushing to cut electric vehicle (EV) prices, so they remain eligible for the plug-in car grant (PiCG).
It means, for example, the Tesla Model 3, with prices starting from £42,500, and the new Ford Mustang Mach-E, which is priced from £40,295, will now not qualify for the incentive.
However, Nissan, Vauxhall, Peugeot, BMW and Hyundai, which had electric cars priced just above the new £35,000 threshold, have reduced vehicle costs to remain eligible for the grant.
Ford said the Government decision to cut the grant, meaning that the Mustang Mach-E now misses out, was disappointing. “Robust incentives - for both purchase and usage - that are consistent over time are essential if we are to encourage consumers to adopt new technologies, not just for all-electrics but other technologies too like PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) that pave the way to a zero-emissions future,” a Ford spokesman expla ....

The new pricing means that Kona Electric 64 KWh now has the longest electric range – 300 miles (WLTP) –  of any Plug-in Car Grant-eligible vehicle.
Previously electric cars up to £50,000 were eligible for a £3,000 grant, but the changes reduce those figures to £35,000 and £2,500 respectively. Three Hyundai models qualified under the change to the threshold, which would limit customer choice. Now all but one Hyundai electric vehicle qualifies for the grant and prices have been reduced across the range.
The IONIQ Electric range sees prices cut for the Premium model to £32,995 and the Premium SE to £34,995 (before first registration fee applied). Premium models are already well equipped, with 10.2-inch widescreen navigation, 7-inch TFT Driver Information Display, Wireless Charging Pad, and heated seats and steering wheel. The Premium SE, meanwhile, adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, leather seat facings and Mem ....

Behind the latest-generation Tucson’s bold grille, you’ll find the 1.6-litre petrol engine already offered in the family SUV’s hybrid variants. That turbocharged engine is joined by an electric motor, providing a combined maximum power output of 262 bhp. That means 0-62 mph will take 8.6 seconds, while the top speed will be 118 mph. ....
