Hyundai recently paid homage to its roots by reimagining the Pony hatchback as an EV concept for the 21st century. This particular hatchback is quite the landmark in Hyundai’s history, as it was the carmaker’s first ever standalone vehicle. Let’s turn back the clock on how the Pony came about.

While, technically, Hyundai’s first model was the Cortina back in 1968, it was actually a Ford model, Hyundai simply handled the assembly in South Korea. It was only in 1974 that their plans to develop their own model started taking shape. With some help from George Turnbull, ex-Managing Director of Austin Morris at British Leyland, and designer Giorgetto Giugiaro the carmaker finally took the wraps off the Pony at the Turin Motor Show in October ....

Restomod version of classic Pony emerges with high-tech EV underpinnings from IONIQ 5
Hyundai has delivered a retro-modern take on the iconic Hyundai Pony, inserting some of its latest technology into its first-ever mass-production model that first hit the road in 1975.
That includes an EV powertrain, believed to have been transplanted straight from the South Korean car-maker’s upcoming IONIQ 5, as well as various other “future-oriented elements” that bring Hyundai’s classic small car into the 21st century.
These include fresh pixelated round LED headlights and U-shaped tail-lights, along with fender-mounted “mirrors” which are actually camera pods. ....

Hyundai Pony Heritage Series electric concept has been unveiled, as a zero-emissions reimagining of Hyundai s first-ever production vehicle.
Revealed at Hyundai s newly-opened Motorstudio Busan exhibition centre in Korea earlier this month, the Pony Heritage Series restomod concept borrows many design cues from the brand s latest Ioniq 5 electric vehicle – itself inspired by the 45 Concept, another show car built as a retro-styled tribute to the original 1975 Pony.
Up front, a new set of LED headlights inspired by the original Pony s four-strong circular set feature, which see the daytime-running lights illuminate the outer region of the lighting unit, and the main headlight beam shine from a circular section in the centre. ....
