Hebrew Academy teens win $5,000 for two non-profits


Montreal’s Diabetic Children’s Foundation and Leucan, an association for children with cancer, are each $2,500 richer today thanks to seven Grade 10 Hebrew Academy students who won grants on the organizations’ behalf.
On April 23, four semi-finalist student groups representing Old Brewery Mission, Dans la Rue, Leucan and Montreal’s Diabetic Children’s Foundation presented their charities before their peers and two judges, High School French Department Head Danielle Joseph and Ms. Racheli Blanshay, a former YPI finalist.
The nail-biting face-off signified the climax of students’ months-long participation in the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), a project of the Toskan Casale Foundation that encourages teens to research and advocate for a local charity for the chance to win it a $5,000 grant. This year two organizations tied, splitting the prize. ....

Private Greensboro school could be used to house immigrant children who crossed the U.S. border unaccompanied by an adult

GREENSBORO — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is considering using the site of the former American Hebrew Academy as a relocation center for unaccompanied immigrant children as they await reunion with family members in the U.S.
Melvin Skip Alston, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, said Thursday that HHS officials came to Greensboro Tuesday to inspect the dormitory and classroom buildings at the academy campus to consider whether it would be suitable.
Alston said he is not sure when the government will make a decision, but such a center would have a big impact on Greensboro. ....

Walter Johnson Student Wins Raskin’s 2021 Congressional Art Competition
Yun Ji Choi of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda took first place in Maryland’s 8th Congressional District’s 2021 Congressional Art Competition. Her digital art piece, titled “Promise to Keep You Safe,” will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
“Congratulations to Yun Ji Choi on winning this year’s art competition for 8th District high school students,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md. 8). “I salute the 17 second-place honorees and thank all of the student participants for sharing their boundless artistic vision.
