On Monday, William “Bill” Bridgeo announced his intention to retire as Augusta’s city manager in September, after decades of service to the community.

AUGUSTA City Manager William “Bill” Bridgeo has announced his retirement, after 23 years as Augusta’s manager and 43 years in municipal management.
The 71-year-old Maine native said he still loves his job, but the time is right for someone new to take on the job and for him to join his wife, Janice, who retired six months ago after two decades as an elementary school teacher in Winthrop. ....

Augusta may tap state resources to reach out to residents with substance use problems

AUGUSTA The growing number of drug overdose deaths has the city planning to further partner with the state to reach out to drug users, and their loved ones, to try to save lives.
And in some cases it may even mean helping people with substance use disorder use illegal drugs more safely, with harm reduction strategies.
City councilors met Thursday with the state’s Opioid Response Project Manager Rowland Robinson who offered the city the use of the state’s OPTIONS initiative media campaign materials on city social media, CTV-7 television station and other city outlets.

The OPTIONS initiative which stands for Overdose Prevention Through Intensive Outreach, Naloxone and Safety is a state program introduced last year by Gov. Janet Mills to assist those suffering from substance use disorders and curb fatal opioid drug overdoses. ....

Residential, commercial tenants snap up space in Augusta historic renovation


Seven of the nine apartments at 341 Water St. were leased before the apartments were officially listed Monday. Developer Matt Pouliot wasn t concerned about the other two earlier this week there were 17 showings scheduled.
They ll be leased by the end of this week, Pouliot said as he stood in front of the 16,128-square-foot building that caps the southern end of Water Street. He and his wife, Heather, bought the building in 2018 and are just completing a renovation that is not only bringing more residents, but also commercial tenants, to downtown Augusta.
The ground-floor commercial space will be home to anchor tenant Maine Math and Science Alliance, which has been spending the past month moving into 2,789 L-shaped square feet at 343 Water St. The organization provides STEM training to educators and is expected to bring hundreds of visitors a year to downtown. ....
