Hawaii Tourism Authority bill advances to full Senate April 11, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail HILO, Hawaii (AP) Two state Senate committees have voted to advance a House bill that would reconfigure how the aerospace industry is managed in Hawaii with amendments that some argue limit the duties and resources of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. The bill was originally aimed at eliminating the office of aerospace development, the aerospace advisory committee and the state unmanned aerial systems test site advisory board. It also would transfer administration for other programs to the University of Hilo at Hilo and the state Department of Education. However, the bill was amended earlier this week to cut back the Hawaii Tourism Authority s ability to conduct activities other than marketing and promotion, removing its authority to develop policies and form advisory boards and limiting the amount of funding it could draw from the Tourism Emergency Special Fund. ....

Hawaii Island had previously only allowed those age 60 and up and individuals with certain underlying diseases to receive the vaccine. Despite the expansion beginning on Monday, Hilo Medical Center announced it will be expanding eligibility to those age 16 and up Thursday to encourage more people to sign up for appointments at the centerâs mass vaccination POD on Saturday. ....

Hilo Medical Center (HMC) officials said 2,000 people came through to get their first dose in the islandâs first mass inoculation event. HMC employees volunteered to give the shots to educators and essential workers eligible under the 1b phase. Nursing and pharmacy students from UH Hilo were also on hand to assist, as well as Hawaii County Firefighters. ....
