CLEVELAND, Ohio - The COVID-19 slump is over for Ohio’s casinos and racinos. The question is how much business will surge beyond where it was ever at ahead of the pandemic.
The state’s 11 casinos and racinos in April combined to take in a record $217.1 million in gambling revenue, after paying out winnings, reports released by the state show.
What was formerly acres of blighted and abandoned apartments are now going to be home to a small and affordable apartment development. But whether it s a harbinger of better things ahead for the area near Westland Mall remains unclear.
Woda Cooper Companies plans to build 60 affordable apartments for senior residents near the Havenwood Townhomes site, which sits just west of and across Georgesville Road from Hollywood Casino Columbus near Westland Mall.
The apartments are being built in Prairie Township on former Franklin County land bank parcels. The land bank tore down about 40 blighted apartment buildings totaling 760 units, said Curtiss Williams, president and CEO of the land bank known as the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation.

Ohio’s casino, racino business dips 26% in 2020; state out $165 million

CLEVELAND, Ohio Ohio’s casino and racino industry enjoyed record performances when fully operating in 2020, but gambling revenue for the year overall was down $500 million, mainly the result of full and partial closings ordered by Gov. Mike DeWine because of coronavirus concerns.
Reports released Thursday by the state’s casino control and lottery commissions show gambling revenue totaled $1.44 billion for the year at the 11 facilities across Ohio, down 26% from a record $1.94 billion in 2019.
This is the money kept by casinos and racinos after paying out winnings. About a third of it is then forwarded to the state in the form of taxes and fees. The drop in revenue for 2020 will mean about $135 million less in these taxes and fees.
