Faculty Discuss Response to Epstein Report, Conflict of Interest Reporting | News


Harvard administrators outlined responses the University has taken regarding the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein’s ties to Harvard during a monthly meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Tuesday.
After University President Lawrence S. Bacow initiated a review into Epstein’s ties to Harvard in 2019, the committee recommended in 2020 that Harvard revise its policies concerning external gifts as well as those regarding appointments of visiting fellows.
Bacow said Tuesday one of the changes the University made after the report was increasing vetting of external gifts prior to acceptance. University Provost Alan M. Garber ’76 additionally reminded faculty of the University’s gift policy guide released in May 2020. ....

As Scientists Rally to His Defense, Lieber Rules Out Plea Deal, Plans To Stand Trial | News


Former Harvard Chemistry chair Charles M. Lieber is set to go to trial on federal charges after his attorney eliminated the possibility of a plea in a Friday status conference.
“At this time, Your Honor, there is no possibility of a plea and there will be a trial,” Marc L. Mukasey, Lieber’s counsel, told Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler of the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts.
Last June, a federal grand jury indicted Lieber who serves as a University Professor, Harvard’s highest academic honor on charges that he lied to federal investigators who were examining funding he had received from the Chinese government. He was also indicted on four tax offenses the following month. ....

U.S. Attorney in Lieber Case Says He Encourages Lawful Academic Collaboration with China: 'No One is Saying Don't Do It' | News


Disclosure by academics and cooperation from universities are paramount in maintaining a balance between open academic exchange and national security priorities, United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling said in a Jan. 20 interview with The Crimson.
Lelling — who serves as U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts — has prosecuted several academics for failing to disclose their research ties to Chinese institutions and the Chinese government. Notably, Charles M. Lieber, the former Harvard Chemistry department chair, was arrested last January on charges of lying to federal authorities about his involvement in a Chinese talent recruitment program. He is being prosecuted by Lelling’s office. ....

Former Harvard-Affiliated Researcher Ordered to Leave Country for Lying about Research Vials He Took from Lab | News


Zaosong Zheng, a former researcher at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, was sentenced on Wednesday for lying to federal agents in connection with his attempt to take cancer research to China.
U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper sentenced Zheng to time served approximately 87 days and three years of supervised release, as well as ordering his removal from the United States.
Zheng’s lawyers wrote in a Tuesday sentencing memo that Zheng has tickets to return to China Wednesday and has agreed to not return to the U.S. for at least 10 years.
Zheng a 31-year-old who arrived in the United States from China in 2018 pleaded guilty to lying to customs officials last month. On December 10, 2019, Zheng was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport after customs officials found vials of biological material in a sock packed in his suitcase. Beth Israel fired Zheng following his arrest. ....
