Police: Brunswick woman, Sabattus man face drug charges after Wednesday crash

Brunswick police say they arrested two people on drug charges following a car crash on Harpswell Road in Brunswick Wednesday morning.
According to police, Angela Prout, 42, of Brunswick, was allegedly driving a 2014 Ford Taurus owned by a passenger, Robert Coulombe, 53, of Sabattus, southbound when the car drifted into the opposite lane and struck a utility pole.
The crash caused power lines to fall across the road.
Prout and Coulombe were taken to Mid Coast Hospital with minor injuries.
After an investigation, police say they charged Prout with unlawful possession of heroin, a Class C crime, punishable by up to five years incarceration and a $5,000 fine, and driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor. ....

A relative of the man who led police on a dangerous, high-speed chase this week said she begged Brunswick police to take him into custody and get him to a hospital hours before the pursuit began.
But Brunswick officers refused and told Trista Toothaker, 32, that there was nothing they could do. Although her uncle, David Stoddard, 49, was acting irrationally and speaking in gibberish, police permitted Stoddard to drive away from the Fairfield Inn on Old Portland Road on Tuesday morning, Toothaker said. ....

When a New Year begins, things often seem fresh and open in new ways. There is a renewed energy to try new things and explore new places. Last week, I wrote about the increase in outdoor activity in 2020 as a result of the pandemic. More people tried out fishing or found a new picnic spot. In Midcoast Maine, many of places are bordered by water of some sort. And, much of this is salty, at least to some degree. We have over 66 miles of coastline just in Brunswick alone. BRUNSWICK A Brunswick town councilor wants to rezone a roughly 140-acre parcel on Brunswick Landing in an effort to save the land for trails and conservation and prevent development by Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority something he said could do “permanent ecological damage.”
The 144 acres in question were part of a roughly 275-acre area given to Bowdoin College for educational purposes in 2006 and includes a cranberry wetland, a radar tower, abandoned military bunkers, airport access roads, a quarry and land formerly part of the town commons. ....
