LEBANON City officials voted Wednesday night to form a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission despite concerns that the group’s efforts could conflict with a new state law that seeks to limit some discussions about race and sex.
The City Council voted unanimously to create the nine-member group, which could start meeting in the fall.
Its mission is to recommend ways to “address diversity and equity issues, promote inclusion/diversity programs and provide guidance to create a more accessible, safe, welcoming and inclusive government and community.”
That includes working alongside Lebanon’s business and nonprofit communities. To track progress, the commission will issue quarterly reports to the City Council. ....

LEBANON City councilors are expected to hold a public hearing and vote Wednesday evening to create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission, though a legal opinion does raise some caveats for city officials to consider.
The commission is intended to provide education and opportunities for conversations and to “bring the community together and bridge the divide to the extent it exists regarding diversity, equity and inclusion,” according to a memo to councilors from the city manager, who recommends passage of the measure, which requires amending city code. ....

LEBANON City officials say they intend to create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission to advise Lebanon on matters regarding race and sex regardless of warnings that the group’s efforts could conflict with a state law that opponents worry will limit discussions about systemic racism.
The Lebanon City Council voted Wednesday night to schedule a Wednesday, July 21 public hearing on the proposed commission, a step that’s required for changes to the city code.
If passed, the nine-member group could start work promoting training and educational programs, and offering guidance on ways the city can create a “safe, welcoming and inclusive” community this fall. ....

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION Most of the five candidates vying for two Hartford Selectboard seats say they’re focused on issues that include finding “common ground” among Hartford residents and villages.
