Dan O Brien Dan O’Brien is out with a new book April 5, called A Story that Happens.On Playwriting, Childhood, & Other Traumas. The playwright and author presents four essays—all previously used as lectures at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference—to take a look at what it means to be an artist in today’s world and how personal pain can be used to create stories. O’Brien’s work includes The House in Scarsdale: A Memoir for the Stage, winner of the 2018 PEN America Award in Drama. His The Body of an American received an off-Broadway premiere at Primary Stages in a co-production with Hartford Stage and won the Horton Foote Prize for Outstanding New American Play. It also ran at Portland Center Stage and the Gate Theatre in London. His plays are published by Concord Theatricals and Methuen Drama. His other books include the poetry collections

Dan O Brien is an internationally-recognized playwright and poet who has received such honors the Guggenheim Fellowship in Drama, the Horton Foote Prize, the Edward M. Kennedy Prize and two PEN America Awards. O Brien has published three poetry collections (War Reporter, New Life, and Scarsdale) and is set to release his new book next month. Entitled A Story that Happens: On Playwriting, Childhood, & Other Traumas , the book is collection of essays originally written as a series of craft lectures for the annual Sewanee Writers Conference. Drawing on O Brien s experience with cancer, childhood abuse, his friendship and collaboration with a war reporter, and his years of playwriting, this book delivers meaningful reflections on storytelling in the theatre, and insights into writing through the lens of trauma and triumph.
