Closing the Gender Gap in Cardiology Clinical Trial Leadership: A Road Map

June 11, 2021
Women are conspicuously absent as leaders of cardiovascular clinical trials now, an “actionable road map” aims to rectify this imbalance by itemizing the core competencies required to lead a clinical trial, and by offering concrete steps that institutions, professional societies, industry, and public funding agencies can take to ensure clinical trials get more female principal investigators and chairs.
“We must adopt transformative strategies to harness the strengths of women as CV clinical trial leaders and deconstruct the sexism that has been normalized in the clinical trial enterprise,” the authors write. “For far too long, recruitment, advancement, mentorship, and sponsorship have followed gender lines, with decisions generally made by men for men.” ....

$45 Million OHSU Lawsuit Hits a Nerve for #CardiologyToo

March 05, 2021
Cardiologists and other healthcare professionals may be shocked by the specifics set out in this week’s news of a $45 million lawsuit against Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and a former anesthesia resident. But they’re also not surprised.
Jason Campbell, MD, who is widely known as the TikTokDoc and whose dance moves brought joy during the COVID-19 pandemic, is accused in the suit of sending explicit texts, photos, and messages as well as sexual assault.
What stands out is here not the months-long, all-too-common ordeal described in the lawsuit. Rather, it’s the time line showing that the woman, an employee at the Portland VA Medical Center, where Campbell occasionally worked, had to repeatedly push for OHSU to put the behavior to an end. ....

Primary PCI Underused but Just as Effective in Cancer Patients With STEMI

February 04, 2021
Patients with cancer, including hematologic, breast, and lung cancer, who present with STEMI fare just as well with primary PCI as those without cancer, according to the results of a new study.
While primary PCI is underutilized in this high-risk group, with just half of lung cancer patients, for example, taken to the cath lab for revascularization, researchers found there was no significant difference in the risk of in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events or all-cause mortality based on whether STEMI patients had cancer.
“Overall, these findings should provide some reassurance or evidence for operators who might be more cautious and potentially worried about causing harm in this high-risk group,” lead investigator Mohamed O. Mohamed, MBBCh (Keele University/Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke-on-Trent, England), told TCTMD. ....
