Relaxing coronavirus restrictions over Christmas could lead to an “unrelenting tsunami” of cases, a nursing chief has warned, as the devolved nations braced for stricter measures in the immediate aftermath.
Northern Ireland announced a six-week lockdown to start on Boxing Day, following Wales’ lead to preempt the threat to health services, while ministers in Scotland also refused to rule out tougher curbs. ....

Medical journals warn Christmas easing of Covid-19 rules in UK will ‘cost many lives’

Pressure is increasing on the Government to rethink the easing of Covid-19 restrictions over the Christmas period after two leading medical journals warned the move would “cost many lives”.
In a rare joint editorial, the British Medical Journal and Health Service Journal called for the “rash” decision to relax social distancing measures over the festive period to be scrapped.
They said that the Government “is about to blunder into another major error that will cost many lives”. ....

(Alliance News) - Boris Johnson has said that leaving the EU without a free trade agreement still remains the most likely outcome as talks continue in Brussels.
The UK prime minister told his Cabinet on Tuesday that he was committed to continuing negotiations on the remaining areas of disagreement and re-emphasised the desire to strike a deal.
His official spokesman told a Westminster briefing: (Johnson) re-emphasised the desire to reach a free trade agreement – but not at any cost – and reiterated that any agreement must respect the independence and sovereignty of the UK. ....
