Munchausen syndrome and its long-term impact on one Colorado Springs family

Munchausen syndrome by proxy, also known as “factitious disorder imposed on another,” is defined by the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as “the intentional production or feigning of physical or psychological signs or symptoms in another person who is under the individual’s care.” It’s a disorder that first emerged, with both clinical and legal ramifications, in the 1970s.
One of the first people to be successfully prosecuted for murders ascribed to the disorder was Martha Woods, an Army wife who was convicted for killing her adopted son Paul Woods in 1972. Though only convicted of the one murder, it is believed that she had nine victims (only two of whom survived) across the United States, including Marlan Rash, an 18-month-old boy who died in Colorado Springs in 1964 while in Martha’s care. ....

Honoring military members during year when loneliness of service hits home


Those who’ve never served in the military may have gotten a small dose this year of what it’s like for servicemen and women who are deployed.
“Maybe you feel isolated from your loved ones so that you can feel safe again in the future,” state Rep. Tim Ackert, R-Coventry, said during a Wreaths Across America ceremony on Dec. 19 at Patriots Park with a small number of onlookers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We will all be together soon, but now I want you to think about our service members and I also want you to think about their families,” Ackert continued. “Our veterans have missed many holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and many special occasions. They were standing guard, they were high above in our skies. They’re on the seas and well below sea level. Our isolation due to the pandemic will soon be over but our military servicemen and women will continue to sacrifice for us.” ....
