Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young was offered a deal to plead guilty to criminal charges in the Gang of Five texting case, but he said he declined the offer because it was ridiculous.
In an exclusive conversation with The Enquirer on Wednesday morning, Young acknowledged for the first time publicly that he s the focus of an ongoing special investigation into text messages among five Democratic council members.
Young didn t detail the terms of the deal he was offered about three weeks ago.
They wanted me to do something I just couldn t do, he said.

Kyle Plush family gets $6 million from Cincinnati for son's death

On the eve of the three-year anniversary of Kyle Plush s death, the city of Cincinnati has agreed to pay $6 million to the teenager s family to settle a wrongful death lawsuit, the second-largest settlement in city history.
The suit was filed after police and 911 center workers failed to rescue the teen, who died after he became trapped under the seat of the minivan he drove to school.
Plush voice-called 911 on April 10, 2018 from the parking lot of Seven Hills School where he was trapped inside a Honda Odyssey. Help never arrived. His death prompted months of city hearings and allegations that the 911 center wasn t property staffed or trained, and in August 2019 the Plush family sued the city. ....

Some people think the tensions between Cincinnati s Black community and the city s police force began on a night in April 2001, when a white police officer chased a 19-year-old Black man into a dark Over-the-Rhine alleyway and killed him with a single shot to the heart.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The fact is the shooting of Timothy Thomas by then-officer Stephen Roach was the lighted match thrown into a highly combustible cauldron of distrust and anger that had been stewing for years and led to six days and nights of civil unrest that gripped the city in fear. ....
