Stories From the Streets: MCI Drill Follows Crowd Tragedy

On a Tuesday night in May, just five days after the Meron crowd-crush tragedy that killed 45, United Hatzalah held a mass-casualty incident (MCI) training drill in the northern city of Kiryat Shmona. The drill simulated a motor vehicle accident involving two minibuses that left patients of various ages with different injuries. Participating in the drill with United Hatzalah was the Israel Defense Forces; the Upper Galilee and Mt. Hermon search and rescue units; United Hatzalah’s psychotrauma team, run by Dr. Moshe Farchi of Tel-Hai College; the fire department; and the police department.
The drill simulated more than 30 casualties with various injuries. The use of makeup and special effects helped create a realistic scenario in which emergency medical service personnel from all the different organizations could identify and treat the injured.  ....

In 1942, all traces of Bianca Schwartz disappeared. An orphan who arrived in Palestine as part of the Youth Aliyah effort to save Jewish refugees from war-torn Europe, she had lived on Kibbutz Afikim in the north before moving to Jerusalem. A lengthy search eventually revealed that Schwartz had converted to Islam, married an Arab man, changed her name to Leila Natshe Ali and was living in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, which in 1948 had come under Jordanian control. The couple had five children. After her husband died, in 1971, she wanted to return to the fold of Judaism. According to one account, Hanania Dery, the chief rabbi of Jaffa, was walking in the Old City when he happened to notice a woman who was dressed in Arab attire but whose facial features struck him as Jewish. Dery asked her to tell him about herself, and thanks to his efforts she returned to her Jewish ....

Late in the evening on the last day of 2020, hundreds of people arrived at the coronavirus vaccination site in Jerusalem’s Arena indoor stadium. They arrived without warning and without having made appointments for their inoculations. Across the coronavirus-ridden city, the rumor had spread that even those not entitled, by age, to be vaccinated could get the shot because there was a vaccine surplus.
This was at the start of the vaccination campaign, when only the over-60 population was being vaccinated through the health maintenance organizations by prior appointment. Nevertheless, on this particular day, a large number of people showed up at the Arena in the hope that they would be able to get the first of their two doses by 10 P.M., closing time, even though there was nothing to indicate that this would be the case. On the contrary: The nurses implored them to go home and said repeatedly that there were no surplus doses. But no one budged. “P ....
