Selma Bears hold off Kingsburg Vikings with five run fourth

SELMA â The Selma High Bears softball team moved to 7-5 overall after a 6-3 victory over the Kingsburg High Vikings on May 11 and a 5-1 win over Washington Union on May 14. Both games were played at Duran Diamond at Selma High School.
The Bears and Vikings were tied 1-1 after two innings on May 12, before the Bears scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Vikings scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning but were unable to overcome the deficit.
âIt gives us a lot of confidence,â said Chris Tapia, Selma High head coach.Â âWe know that we can play with the top teams in the Valley and when we play to our potential this is what we expect.â ....

Dolores Huerta inspires local students

HANFORD â Although the pandemic has put a halt to in-person events, Inspire California continues to do what it can to reach and motivate local high school and college students through virtual events.
Recently, Inspire California hosted a virtual conversation via Zoom with civil rights icon Dolores Huerta as a part of its âConversations that Inspire Changeâ series.
Inspire California is a community-based organization that provides rural Central Valley high school and college students with free comprehensive college preparatory counseling, professional development mentoring and free college campus tours.
This event followed a summer 2018 conversation with Huerta that Inspire California hosted at Hanford West High School as part of its week-long summer college access initiative that also featured then-Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro. ....

Independence High School had a higher graduation rate than Kern High District s overall graduation rate at 94.7 percent, according to the California Department of Education.
In comparison, Kern High District had a graduation rate of 90.5 percent for the 2017-2018 school year. According to CDE data, graduation rates continue to indicate an increase in disproportional academic performance between white, Black, Latino, and English learner students.
