Bates College seniors gathered Thursday for a commencement ceremony that wasn’t quite the same as in pre-COVID times but came close.

LEWISTON Wearing black robes and a lot of maroon masks, Bates College seniors lined up on a lovely May Thursday to the tolling of the bell atop Hathorn Hall for a commencement ceremony that seemed almost normal after a college experience that was anything but.
Overcoming the “pretty high hurdles” imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, “there will always be something extra special of the class of 2021,” said Bates President Clayton Spencer.
“The world has taught us all lessons that we would not have chosen,” Spencer said. ....

The month of May represents the end of the academic year. As the beauty of spring emerges, we experience bittersweet acknowledgments: of the work that remains to be done, the sudden anticipation of goodbyes, and contemplation of life after graduation.

Challenged by a surge of COVID-19 cases in early April, the college dug in its heels, implementing 11 days of in-room restrictions for all students. 
With an understandable spring in their steps, students sprung from their rooms when the restrictions were lifted, embracing with delight all that April can offer during a pandemic: thesis binding, live theater, athletics, and a beautiful campus heading toward full bloom.

Africana major Joshua Redd ’21 of Brooklyn, N.Y., savors a rite of passage: binding a senior thesis with friends in Ladd Library.
“I felt like all of the work that I’d done towards this moment had finally paid off,” said Redd, whose honors thesis explores the experience of Black students in several New York City charter schools. “I’m just so happy that I got the chance to apply what I’ve learned to a project that I genuinely care about.” ....
