A raging fire tore through a COVID-19 ward at an Iraqi hospital Monday, killing at least 50 people with the death toll expected to rise.
The fire at al-Hussain hospital in the city of Nasiriyah was believed to have been sparked by an oxygen tank exploding inside the coronavirus wing of the hospital, according to police reports.
“The victims died of burns and the search is continuing,” said Haydar al-Zamili, a local health authority spokesman.

Bei einem Brand in einem Krankenhaus im SÃ¼den des Irak sind ersten Angaben zufolge mindestens 41 Menschen gestorben. Das berichtete das staatliche Fernsehen am Montagabend. Der Sprecher der GesundheitsbehÃ¶rde der sÃ¼dlichen Provinz Dhi Qar, Ammar Bashar, bestÃ¤tigte die Zahl. Die Leichen der Opfer seien geborgen worden, nachdem das Feuer gelÃ¶scht werden konnte. Laut unbestÃ¤tigten Zeugenaussagen war das Feuer durch die Explosion einer Sauerstoffflasche ausgebrochen.
Das Krankenhaus befindet sich in der Stadt Nassiriya in der Provinz Dhi Qar, rund 370 Kilometer sÃ¼dlich der Hauptstadt Bagdad. Bashar sagte, in der Isolierabteilung des Krankenhauses hÃ¤tten sich 63 Covid-Patienten befunden. ....

At least 52 people died and 22 were wounded when a massive fire engulfed the coronavirus isolation ward of an Iraqi hospital Monday, a health official said.
The fire broke out at the Al-Hussein hospital in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah late Monday and was brought under control by local civil defence forces.
A medical source with the health directorate told AFP the main reason behind the fire. was the explosion of oxygen tanks .
Haydar al-Zamili, the local health authority s spokesperson, said early Tuesday 52 bodies were retrieved and another 22 people were wounded in the latest toll, after the fire had ripped through the Covid isolation ward . ....
