OPINION:
As comes with the territory when you write an opinion-based column, I tend to run into my fair share of trolls.
Normally, I don t mind. It usually means I ve stirred something up in them, or perhaps touched on something they are feeling a little fragile about. So when a cranky message slides into my DMs, I give it a quick once-over and then get on with my day. ....

What Made Stephen Hawking the World's Most Famous Scientist?

The Mysteries of Stephen Hawking’s Universe
Why did “A Brief History of Time” make its author the most famous scientist in the world?
IAN BERRY/MAGNUM
April 6, 2021
The last time Stephen Hawking was ever uncertain about his fame was before a lecture in Cambridge, in the winter of 1988. Even then, really, he should have been in no doubt. In previous years, he’d been profiled by
Vanity Fair and
The New York Times Magazine, and the BBC had run shows about his work. Then, that past April, his book on cosmology,
A Brief History of Time, had been published to instant and staggering success. Bookstores ran out. People wore T-shirts printed with the words STEPHEN HAWKING FAN CLUB. Still, as one of his students drove him to the lecture, Hawking was tetchy. “I’m worried that nobody will show up.” ....

Prospect Interview to discuss Charles Seife’s
Hawking Hawking: The Making of a Scientific Celebrity and talks to arts and books editor Sameer Rahim about humanising a scientific deity, and why it was that Hawking, out of all of his other similarly accomplished peers, became a household name.

Stephen Hawking, celebrity scientist

For decades, cosmologist Stephen Hawking was caught in a contradiction. In popular culture, he was portrayed as a pure mind roaming the cosmos to uncover fundamental truths of the Universe, the modern heir to Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. In the physics community, he was respected as a productive theorist who made seminal contributions to black hole research, but many scientists considered his popular reputation to be ludicrously overblown. Veteran science writer Charles Seife seeks to resolve this contradiction in Hawking Hawking , the best biography yet published of the most famous scientist of recent decades. Seife presents Hawking as a complicated man and evaluates the cosmologist s scientific legacy, both of which became obscured by decades of self-promotion, marketing, and mythmaking.

The popular-culture image of Hawking arose largely as a result of the success of his 1988 cosmology book, A Brief History of Time , which became an unexpected nonfiction blockbuster, sell ....
