Fundraiser to help Howland High School student fighting COVID-19 | News, Sports, Jobs

BENEFIT: The “No Tiger Fights Alone” fundraiser to help Howland High School student Sandra Rose will be held 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Howland Tiger Stadium. Sandra has been battling COVID-19, diabetes and other health issues at the Cleveland Clinic. The fundraiser will include a drive-thru dinner, 50-50 raffle, cornhole, basket raffle and bake sale. Sandra is a junior at the school and a cheerleader. She was moved to a children’s rehabilitation facility earlier this week.
CEMETERY CLEANUP: The Vienna Historical Society will host a cleanup at noon Saturday at Doud Cemetery, located next to state Route 11 off King Graves Road. Those who can help are asked to meet at the cemetery. ....

WARREN Nancy Elizabeth Curtis Hoy, 75, passed away peacefully at the Hospice House in Poland on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, surrounded by her family.
Nancy was born Nov. 24, 1945, in Cleveland, the daughter of Walter Albert and Helen Marquette Curtis. The family moved to Warren in 1947, and she always fondly spoke about her wonderful childhood living on Kenmore NE, where she spent endless hours playing outside with the children from the neighborhood.
Nancy attended Garfield Elementary, East Junior High and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1963. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bob, in 10th grade. Little did she know, as she shyly asked to borrow a book from him in study hall, that this would be the beginning of relationship that lasted 60 years. They dated all through high school and college, while Nancy attended Marietta College (Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority member) and graduated from Mount Union College in 1967 with a Bachelor o ....

HOWLAND Howland Community Church’s senior minister, the Rev. Erica Brown, has her work featured in “The Christian Century” magazine.
Brown, of Warren, wrote a major book review, which was published in the March 24 issue.
“The Christian Century” is a national journal founded in 1912 for clergy, churches and theological dialogue in predominately mainline denominations.
Brown reviewed the book, “The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song,” written by Dr. Henry Louis Gates Jr.
The book was made into a three- part documentary, which aired on PBS last month. The documentary also has a northeast Ohio connection. It was produced and directed by Stacey L. Holman, who grew up in Shaker Heights. ....

OSU EXTENSION KICKS OFF PROGRAM: The Ohio Department of Agriculture and OSU Extension Offices are kicking off the second year of the Victory Gardens program. Due to high demand, the program is expanding from 10 to 25 counties across the state, with 8,300 seed packets available free to the public. Ohio Victory Gardens are meant to be enjoyed by everyone, from urban apartment dwellers to those living in the country, and everyone in between.
Seeds are available for pick up at the OSU Extension Trumbull County office, 520 W. Main St, Cortland, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Seeds also can be picked up during a drive-thru event 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Call 330-638-6783 for information.
