Wayfinding kiosks to be built, parking upgrades made


GORHAM — A half-year effort to help nonmotorized recreationalists more easily find in-town trailheads and other outdoor amenities is underway, thanks to $40,000 in federal grants that have been funneled through the Northern Border Regional Commission to the Concord-based Northern Forest Center.
Gorham is one of a number of “sub-recipient” communities participating in a regional effort to attract outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, bicycling, paddling, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, mushing and horseback riding.
The select board voted at its Monday’s meeting, July 26, to accept the grant to build and install five new three-panel kiosks in high-need recreational areas and trailheads and two new single-panel kiosks at each end of Casey’s Way, a multi-model pathway that starts on Route 2 and runs to the municipal airport. ....

Vermont gets over $100,000 for Northern Forest Destination Development Initiative


“For the second year in a row, this unique partnership has identified crucial projects in our region that support what those of us who live here have known for a long time, that this is 
theplace to recreate outdoors and to build a business that enables outstanding experiences for both returning visitors and new friends,” said Rich Grogan, executive director of the Northern Border Regional Commission.
The $317,526 granted this year leverages matching funds and in-kind project support for a total $515,491 investment in community-based outdoor recreation amenities. Coupled with 10 grants awarded in 2020, the initiative’s support for outdoor recreation infrastructure in the region totals $619,317 in grant funds toward a total $1.1 million investment in recreation projects. ....
