Travel Guide: Oahu Vacation + Trip Ideas | Travel + Leisure

March 01, 2021 Oahu is the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, located southeast of Kauai. The most populous of the islands, Oahu is home to the state capital of Honolulu and its cosmopolitan surroundings. Historic sites like Iolani Palace and Bishop Museum contrast with modern luxury hotels and highrise apartments. The glittering skyline, along with the Diamond Head crater, form a stunning backdrop for Waikiki s popular beaches.  Not far from the shops, restaurants, and hotels of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, the scenery changes to quiet beaches, green valleys, and mountain views. On the windward or east coast of the island, beaches like Kailua, Makapu u, and Lanikai offer white sand, shade trees, and waves for surfing, snorkeling, and bodyboarding. On the North Shore, visitors find more than seven miles of the famous beaches that attract surfers from around the world, especially during the winter months when the waves are big and challenging. ‘Incredible transformation’: Volunteers make long-awaited park a reality New park in Waikiki open to the public (Source: Honolulu Dept. of Parks & Recreation) By HNN Staff | February 2, 2021 at 10:32 AM HST - Updated February 2 at 11:07 AM HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - After nearly 20 years of planning and 4,000 hours of volunteer work, a new park in Waikiki is now open to the public. Working with the city, the Rotary Club of Honolulu raised more than $1.5 million to create Centennial Park, saving the nearly one-acre lot from development. Monkeypod trees, palm trees and various native Hawaiian plants are now growing in an area which was once a staging area for construction vehicles.
