THE Saltaire Festival is set to return in person later this year after an enforced two-year break due to the pandemic. The event, usually held annually, traditionally brings 10 days of culture to the village, including exhibitions, dance, poetry, plays and more in September. Organisers of the popular event have confirmed, pending no changes to the Government’s Covid restrictions, that the festival will return between September 10 and 19. Hartley Developments has planned to build homes on the former Hirst Wood Nursery in Saltaire, just off the banks of the Leeds Liverpool Canal, for several years. But Bradford Council has refused two applications for the site, with planning officers arguing that the plot, in the Green Belt, on the edge of a World Heritage Site and next to the canal Conservation Area, was not suitable for such a development. Last year the Hartley Group appealed against the most recent refusal, arguing the site had previously been developed, and the homes would not harm the area. ....
A WEST Yorkshire writer and artist has produced an annotated book of woodland walks in the Bradford district. From small pockets to large swathes, Bradford is rich in woodland. Chris Goddard has mapped areas from well-trodden St Ives and Shipley Glen, to smaller, lesser-known woods including Buck Wood in Thackley and Chellow Dene off Haworth Road. Heaton Woods, Goit Stock Wood in Harden and Shipley’s Hirst Wood are among those featured in this charming publication which focuses on the Aire Valley. “Woodland is often very well-preserved,” says Chris. “Hidden in the trees you can find historic features such as wells, old tracks and sometimes the trees themselves are of historic interest. ....
