The quarterback play was inconsistent, the offensive line struggled and there were drops by the receivers.
The running backs, meanwhile, were far from a highlight. Although the blame doesn’t fall solely on their shoulders, the Spartans had one of the least-productive rushing attacks in the nation.
“Ultimately, we didn’t play very well last year,” Michigan State running backs coach William Peagler said. “I wasn’t pleased with the way we played but I think our guys have kind of put a chip on their shoulder and said let’s go compete our asses off and take this thing to the next level.”

Coming off rushing for 988 yards and five touchdowns in a breakout redshirt freshman season in 2019, Collins was not the same player last year – not in the way he looked on the field or in production. He was relegated to a reserve role and finished with 41 carries for only 90 yards and zero touchdowns in seven games.
