Deakin University and Hanwha Defense Australia have strengthened their partnership by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Founded in 1952, Hanwha Corporation has grown to become South Korea’s largest defence company. It has established a formidable reputation for research and development across aerospace, fintech and clean energy, areas that align with Deakin’s strategic priorities and its research and commercialisation expertise.
The MoU was signed on 6 May at the Waurn Ponds Campus – home to Deakin’s Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) – by Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin and Hanwha Defense Australia Director of Strategy and Business Development, Mr Tim Pickford. The agreement will drive collaboration between Deakin and Hanwha in modelling and simulation, machine learning applications and human performance. ....

Soucy’s Composite Rubber Track system will be fitted to the Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle produced by Hanwha Defense under an agreement signed today.
The Redback is under consideration by the Commonwealth under an ongoing tender process for Project LAND 400 Phase 3, which is an $18 billion to $27 billion project tasked to acquire 450 Infantry Fighting Vehicles for the Australian Defence Force.
Soucy’s Composite Rubber Track (CRT) offers many advantages over conventional metal track designs including up to 70% less vibration, up to 13.5 decibels of noise reduction, less weight, better manoeuvrability, up to 80% less maintenance, and better efficiency that enables higher top vehicle speeds or fuel savings of up to 30%. ....

Hanwha Defense integrates Redback IFV with Spike ATGM and Iron First APS

Hanwha Defense Australia announced on 16 March that it has achieved the integration of two Israeli-made systems with its new Redback infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).
The company said in a statement that integration of the Elbit Systems’ Iron Fist active protection system (APS) with the Redback was successfully demonstrated in late 2020, while several Spike LR2 anti-tank guided missiles – made by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems – were successfully test-fired from the IFV in early February.
The company said that both tests, which it referred to as “key milestones in the validation of the Redback’s offensive and defensive protection systems”, were conducted in Israel. ....

Infantry Fighting Vehicle contenders unveiled

Two contenders for the largest acquisition project in the history of the Army have been officially unveiled in Canberra today.
The new Infantry Fighting Vehicles prototypes are currently under evaluation, and once delivered, the project will provide the Army with an advanced, cutting-edge mounted close combat capability.
The Acting Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne said the Morrison Government is acquiring up to 450 Infantry Fighting Vehicles.
“These next generation infantry fighting vehicles will provide Australian soldiers with higher levels of protection, mobility, firepower and connectivity,” Minister Payne said. ....
