Living near a Superfund hazardous waste site may shorten your life, new research suggests.
There are thousands of Superfund sites across the United States and they include manufacturing facilities, processing plants, landfills and mines where hazardous waste was dumped, left out in the open or poorly managed, posing a risk to the environment and human health.

In this study, researchers analyzed 2018 U.S. Census data and found that overall, life expectancy for people who live near Superfund sites is about two months shorter than normal.
But low-income people who live near Superfund sites could lose nearly 15 months of life expectancy, according to the study published this month in the journal Nature Communications. ....

Superfund sites could reduce the life expectancy for people living in nearby communities by as much as 1.2 years, according to a new study.
In the first nationwide study of its kind, researchers used advanced statistical modeling techniques at the census tract level to examine the impact of contaminated areas in unprecedented detail.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a Superfund site refers to thousands of sites that exist “nationally due to hazardous waste being dumped, left out in the open, or otherwise improperly managed.” This includes manufacturing facilities, processing plants, landfills, and mining sites.
These places tend to negatively affect nearby air, water, and soil quality, meaning those living in close proximity are potentially exposed to toxic chemicals through dermal contact, ingestion, and inhalation. ....

Living near a US Superfund site could shave a year off your life, study finds


After Hurricane Harvey made landfall in south-east Texas in 2017, the University of Houston’s Hanadi Rifai began research along the 50-mile-long Houston Ship Channel, the petrochemical industry’s main artery. Rifai and her colleagues noticed how neighborhoods adjacent to hazardous waste sites, such as where the San Jacinto River meets the channel, seemed to have a lower life expectancy. “That got us interested in a more comprehensive [national] study,” Rifai said.
In a first-of-its-kind study out Tuesday in Nature Communications, Rifai and a team of researchers found that living in a zip code in close proximity to a Superfund site may decrease average life expectancy by 0.2 years. It could be up to a year in socioeconomically challenged communities, says Rifai, who is a professor of civil and environmental engineering and the study’s lead author. ....

HOUSTON - (Feb. 1, 2021) - When aboveground storage tanks fail during a storm and their toxic contents spread, the threat to human health can and probably will flow downwind of the immediate area.
Rice University engineers have developed a model to quantify what could happen when a hurricane or other natural disaster causes such damage based on data gathered from the Houston Ship Channel, the largest petrochemical complex in the United States, during and after two hurricanes, Ike in 2008 and Harvey in 2017. ....
