The Hutchinson Zoo beaver colony has expanded. On April 24th, beaver parents Nora and Clover and aunt Nugget welcomed two kits to the family. Unlike most animals, it is not easy to identify the gender of a beaver. With the help of the University of California Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory and Apple Lane Animal Hospital in Hutchinson, the Hutchinson Zoo has the results. The Zoo hosted a gender reveal party on July 16, and Nora and Clover showed off their twins both boys. The beaver kits played with a biscuit and munched on a cake made from biscuits and bananas. The new additions are growing quickly. They weigh about 12 pounds and are eating solids. As herbivores, they eat leaves, tree bark and vegetables, but their favorite foods are sweet potatoes, carrots and leaf-eater biscuits. ....

On Friday, Hutchinson High School students weren t in the classroom. That s because about 1,000 students and 125 staff members from Hutchinson High School participated in this year s Salthawk Service Day. The annual tradition is in its sixth year. The whole-school effort offers everyone the opportunity to get involved and to give back to the community. Last year, the high school had to hold the service day virtually because of COVID-19 restrictions. This year we had very good attendance at the community service event and I m very proud of our students, said Ryan Ewy, HHS principal. Students worked in area businesses and at the high school, cleaning, sorting, and doing other tasks that were needed by the businesses. ....

VanZant selected as Rolling Hills Zoo’s new executive director The Salina Journal Rolling Hills Zoo announced that Ryan VanZant will be the zoo’s new executive director. VanZant will succeed Bob Jenkins, who retired as the zoo’s executive director after eight years leading the organization. “The Board of Directors of Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) is excited to welcome Ryan VanZant, as our new Executive Director,” said Sandy Walker, RHZ board president, in a release. “Following a nationwide search, Ryan was chosen for his diverse body of experience and his self-described roll up your shirt sleeves and get it done approach. Ryan has a warm and engaging presence and is experienced in, among other things, zoo management, exhibit design and construction and fundraising.
