City and county law enforcement dispute over firing range escalates


The union representing Reno County Sheriff deputies fired off a salvo this week in an ongoing dispute between the local law enforcement agencies over the control of a firearms training range.
Members of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #18 issued a public letter to the media late Wednesday accusing the Hutchinson Police Department administration of attempting to take control of the range that deputies at the sheriff’s office have built up and maintained over more than 3 ½ decades.
However, Hutchinson Police Chief Jeffrey Hooper says the claim is a misrepresentation of the facts and that agreements on the use and development of the range were in negotiations until the sheriff’s office abruptly withdrew a couple of weeks ago. ....

City Council discusses park patrols, economic development, reopening city hall.


The Hutchinson City Council learned Tuesday that the city manager has targeted April 1 as the date to reopen city hall, and that patrols of city parks are stepping up.
The council also appeared to support the city remaining a member of the Regional Economic Area Partnership for about $10,000 per year but it rejected an idea to use idle economic development funds to create a low-interest revolving loan program to support moving small businesses into vacant buildings around town.
The issues were among a range of topics touched on Tuesday not on the council’s agenda but were brought up after the board finished its few agenda items in less than 15 minutes. ....
