Mansome made a bold uncovered move in the last half of the mile to overpower a field of top pacers and win the $20,000 winners-vver feature race at Plainridge Park on Monday afternoon. Rock Diamonds N (Ron Cushing) led to the quarter where Lake Charles (Shawn Gray) pulled and brushed to the front. Positions remained unchanged until the five-eighths where Mansome (Kevin Switzer, Jr.) pulled first-over on the attack. The two horses paced in tandem around the far turn and to the top of the lane where Mansome manned-up. He put away Lake Charles and then held off a late closing kick from Rock Diamonds N to win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:51.2. ....
Hudson Phil has been one of the top pacers at Saratoga Casino Hotel over the past couple of seasons, and on Tuesday (June 1) he added to those totals. The Jackie Greene trainee was one of the top two winningest horses in the Open Pace in the 2019 and 2020 campaigns, but the six-year-old has split his time between Saratoga and tracks out of town. On Tuesday, Hudson Phil drew the outside post in the $10,500 feature for pacers one week after he scored an impressive victory in 1:52. Leading driver Billy Dobson sat behind Hudson Phil and took him back early. Getting away last as the race’s 2-1 co-favourite, Hudson Phil reaped the benefits of first-half fractions of :26.4 and :56 seconds. The Greene trainee then made his move heading to the three-quarter pole as Dobson fanned him to the far outside. The longtime Open star completed his back-to-back jacks behind a three-wide move which saw him score in 1:53. ....
Duplicated N copied his performance of last week after taking early control of the race and never looking back to win the $14,000 weekly pacing feature at Plainridge Park on Monday afternoon. Duplicated N (Bruce Ranger) watched as Hudson Phil (Jay Randall) rushed by him to grab the lead in a brisk :26.1 before pulling the pocket to retake the top as they rolled by the stands. From there Ranger had it all under control and called the shots to his liking. After tapping the breaks in the second panel to :29.2, Duplicated N switched into glide and posted a :27.3 third quarter that stifled an outside attack from Deetzy (Greg Merton). When they came out of the last turn, Duplicated N opened up a two length advantage that he would continue to extend as he paced down the lane under wraps, eventually winning by 3-3/4 lengths in 1:51, which was a new seasonal mark. ....
It appeared not to be Western Joe’s night in the featured $22,500 winners-over $11,500 pace Saturday night (Feb. 6) at The Meadowlands after getting passed at the three-quarter-mile marker, but the veteran warhorse showed his class through the stretch in a thoroughly dominant performance to chalk up a second win in his last three Big M starts. “I wasn’t surprised that he came back to win,” said winning trainer Chris Choate. “When he hits that last turn, it looks like he’s going to finish fifth, but then he kicks in.” Driver Simon Allard had Joe –a seven-year-old gelded son of Western Ideal-Ante Fay–on the go from the get-go, barreling four-wide into the first turn from post 8 in the 10-horse field and taking over the top just after quarter, which was set by Western Fame in :27.3. ....
