On the tenth anniversary of the January 25, 2011 uprising, Egyptians returned to that fateful day, reviving a hashtag that mobilised protesters to demand the ouster of Hosni Mubarak. When Tunisians overthrew their government 10 years ago, their Arab brethren were inspired all across the Middle East. In a show of solidarity with the Tunisian movement and celebrating their success in overthrowing their president, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, many Yemeni youths marched into the Tunisian embassy in Sanaa. They were gradually emboldened to camp in Tahrir Square, demanding change, which they ultimately achieved.
The 2011 Yemen uprising allowed millions to hope for a better and more equitable future, but unfortunately, it was only a brief glimpse. Measures imposed by governments to fight the Covid-19 pandemic have squeezed civil liberties worldwide, with authoritarian regimes seeking to exploit the restrictions as a way to shore up their sometimes shaky control on fast-changing societies, rights groups say.
Demonstrations have been outlawed, elections postponed, and activists subject to even greater repression in a health emergency the political impact of which will still be felt when the pandemic is over.
In Guinea in west Africa, the government has banned all demonstrations until further notice, citing the fight against Covid. Hungary in central Europe is under a state of emergency until February. ....
