THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Coming down heavily on Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan for allegedly misinterpreting Rule 165 of the ‘Rules of Procedure’, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said on Thursday that the Speaker was trying to sabotage the law to save his own face.
The criticism comes a day after Legislative Assembly Secretary S V Unnikrishnan Nair shot off a letter to the Customs, citing Rule 165 to state that the Speaker’s permission had to be sought if a legislative assembly employee was to be served with a legal process. India s COVID-19 caseload rose to 1,03,95,278 with 20,346 new infections being reported in a day, while the number of recoveries surpassed one crore, according to data updated by the Union health ministry on Thursday.
The death toll increased to 1,50,336 as 222 people succumbed to the disease in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 a.m. showed.

Even as Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan maintained that the notice issued by the Customs summoning his assistant private secretary K. Ayyappan for questioning in the foreign currency smuggling case was not in order, the Customs on Thursday issued notice to the official in his home address to appear before it.
Citing the rules of business of the House at a press conference on the eve of the Budget session of the Assembly, the Speaker said the Customs would have to follow the procedures and that his consent was needed to serve notice on anyone on the premises of the Assembly. ....

The 22nd and final session of the 14th Kerala Legislative Assembly scheduled from January 8 will be held in accordance with the COVID-19 protocol.
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan will make the customary policy address of the government on the opening day of the session. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac will present his 12th Budget and the final Budget of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government on January 15.
