Garden visit brings break from duty for family carers

FAMILY carers from Swindon were treated to a relaxing day among the bowers and blooms as part of the National Garden Scheme s support for frontline charities. The visit to the Old Rectory near Wantage was part of a wider initiative to help unpaid carers get a break from the pressures of looking after family members round the clock.  One member of the group from Swindon Carers Centre said: “It’s great to be with other people who understand, I don’t feel so isolated.  I’m grateful I can come to this lovely place and meet carers like me.” Another said: “I really appreciate this opportunity to come here. It’s been absolute heaven, the relief to have a day to myself and be with other carers I can talk to today is immense.”

Former young carer uses pageant win to make a difference

After becoming a young carer at just 4, Sheri now wants to help others A Swindon woman who became one of Britain’s youngest carers has won a national beauty pageant and wants to use her platform to help other young carers. Sheri Harvey, 22, was announced as the new Miss Atlantic 2021/22 in a virtual ceremony on April 24. She also won the competition’s awards for best in interview, popularity and publicity. For Sheri, competing in pageants started as a way to overcome losing confidence when she was bullied in school. She has since won many beauty pageants in the UK. Sheri is using her Miss Atlantic title to set up her Caring4Children platform, inspired by her own experiences.

Insurance giant Zurich s charity arm donates £320,000 to Swindon good causes throughout 2020

THE charitable arm of a Swindon-based insurance giant has given out £332,000 to good causes around Swindon this year. The Zurich Community Trust has helped 13 charities and community projects who have been hit hard by the pandemic. The company’s employees at each office, including the 950 in its Swindon HQ, took part in fundraisers and voted on which groups to help before the cash was shared between the top picks in each area. The trust has done this every year since 1973. Head Steve Grimmett has worked for the organisation for 20 years. He said: “This is the largest amount we have donated in Swindon in a generation.
