One of the city’s water sources has been given a severe drought designation by the province as hot and dry weather continues in the region. According to BC River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) data, drought level five conditions now exist at the Anderson Creek reporting station near Nelson, as it recorded 10 per cent of its median flow over the last week. BCRFC ranks drought levels from zero to five, with drought level five rated as the most severe, with “adverse impacts to socioeconomic or ecosystem values being almost certain.” ....

Facebook RCMP officers from the Nelson Detachment responded to a variety of calls during the past few weeks, including campers stranded on Pig Island on Kootenay River near Beasley, theft of fire equipment from the Beasley Fire Hall, an intoxicated woman smashing windows with an axe at a boat access cabin in the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, assault with a weapon that had occurred in Slocan Park BC and a report of a large grass fire along Highway 3A near Annabel Road on the North Shore. ....

In order to contain and diminish the wildfire burning northeast of Winlaw another fire will be set. The BC Wildfire Service has increased the area of the Area Restriction Order for the vicinity of the 4,389 hectare Trozzo Creek and Mt Ruppel wildfires near Winlaw and Slocan, respectively. The increased area restriction reflects the continued need to protect the public in areas where ongoing fire suppression activities are taking place and to avoid interference with fire control.
