Tommie's lasting legacy of accuracy, humanity and trust


One of the iconic careers in Irish broadcasting will draw to a close in April when Sligo s Tommie Gorman steps down as RTÉ s Northern Editor.
The announcement of the Cairns Road native s impending departure late last week resulted in an outpouring of tributes from home and abroad including at Monday s monthly meeting of Sligo County Council.
Having also served as North Western Correspondent, as well as a stint as European Editor in Brussels, Mr Gorman has been one of the most recognisable faces in Irish journalism for the duration of his career.
The impact he has had was underlined by the number of tributes paid to him in recent days, including from Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster and many more from the world of politics, journalism and TV viewers in Ireland and the UK. ....

Brendan Scott: a short but lasting legacy


He may never have held elected office, but an Easkey native who is considered by many to have been the most influential left wing figure of his generation is the subject of an intriguing new book detailing his life of activism.
Brendan Scott, born in the west Sligo village in 1933, had his life tragically cut short at the age of 40 in 1973 when he passed away after a battle with stomach cancer.
Although his life was relatively short, his efforts as an activist through his extensive involvement with the Labour Party and a number of other organisations made him one of the most revered political minds for a period of 20 years up until his death. A teacher by profession, it s understood that Mr Scott left Easkey after his years in primary school, and later spent time in London where he was further entrenched in the Labour movement. ....

It stands majestic over Sligo bay - Queen Maeve s cairn atop Knocknarae is an iconic monument in the county but it s also part of an extensive neolithic landscape with over 85 sites of varying sizes spread across the county. 
While Queen Maeve s tomb, with 30,000 tonnes of stone capping the mountain, may be the stand-out monument, below it lies many more fascinating sites in places like Carrowmore, Carrowkeel and Knocknashee.
Experts now say that this connected landscape of passage tombs deserves international recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site. ....

RESIDENTS IN THE Larkhill area of Sligo town are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed due to a fire involving asbestos.
Emergency services were called to the blaze in a small domestic garage shortly before 5am this morning.
Sligo County Council said that a small number of houses were evacuated as a “precautionary measure.” ....
