Slough Labour reacts to 2021 local election victory

The Slough Labour Group managed to retain most of the borough’s wards, and gained in Upton, with 11 councillors out of 14 voted in.
The Conservatives had two councillors voted in and councillor Madhuri Bedi retained her seat but this time as an Independent.
Reacting to the local Labour’s win, Slough’s MP Tan Dhesi said: “I am extremely grateful for the good people of Slough for continuing to bestow their trust and I can assure you that those 11 councillors will be working very hard on your behalf to make sure that they make our community a better, safer place so that you can all be proud of them and you can be proud of Slough. ....

Slough Labour speak out over councillor Haqeeq Dar's suspension

SLOUGH Labour has confirmed the former deputy mayor no longer sits as a Labour member while he is under investigation.
Last week, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) understood Wexham Lea councillor Haqeeq Dar was suspended by central Labour pending investigation into complaints.
It was not made clear when and the reasons why he was suspended.
Slough Labour has revealed to the LDRS that Cllr Dar has been administratively suspended from the Labour Party on April 30 and no longer sits as a Labour councillor pending the outcome of the investigation.
A Labour Group spokesperson said: “The Labour Group has received notice that Cllr Dar has been administratively suspended from the Labour Party on April 30th and is therefore no longer sitting as a Labour councillor pending the outcome of the investigation by the Labour Party. ....

Slough councillor investigated over Whatsapp message 'attacking' ex-Labour member

Former Labour councillor Madhuri Bedi (Foxborough) has lodged an official complaint against councillor Christine Hulme (Lab: Central) after she reportedly sent a Whatsapp message to other Labour members, saying it took Cllr Bedi ‘long enough’ to resign.
Cllr Bedi, who will stand as an independent at the local election, resigned as a Labour member at a full council meeting on March 8 over the party’s proposal to increase council tax by 4.99 per cent and criticised the Labour-run council’s decisions.
After her resignation, Cllr Hulme is said to have sent a message to the local Labour Party’s Whatsapp, saying: “finally Madhu Bedi has resigned as a Labour member. It took long enough.” ....

Slough Council presses Government over Universal Credit cut


voted in favour to press the Government and urge them not to cut the £20-a-week uplift in Universal Credit.
A motion brought forward by the deputy leader of the council, councillor Sabia Akram (Labour: Elliman), was passed to write to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak demanding the £20 increase to Universal Credit is permanent.
Cllr Akram said: “We often hear the Prime Minister saying he wants to ‘level up’ the UK – but when we judge the Government by its actions and not by its sound-bites, it’s hard to see with this regressive cut of £1,000 of welfare support to 8,125 Slough residents that he serious about it?” ....
