After a two-month hiatus, on a new episode of the podcast “Reply All,” hosts Emmanuel Dzotsi and Alex Goldman discussed at length the controversy at Gimlet Media sparked by the podcast’s scrapped miniseries, “The Test Kitchen.”
Released Thursday, the latest episode began with Dzotsi explaining a “pretty short and pretty direct” voice memo he received on Feb. 16 from a friend: “None of this is your problem to fix. Stay the f out of it.”
That problem was a
scandal involving a miniseries that was scheduled to span four episodes. While uncovering how food magazine Bon Appétit became a toxic workplace for its employees of color, Gimlet’s own work environment came under fire.

Gimlet Media and
The Ringer agreed on a three-year union employment contract with Spotify, marking a historic moment for both the tech giant and the podcasting industry. The contracts cover diversity at the company, salary bases, annual raises, and titles. It’s a big step not just for unionization in podcasting, but also for the tech industry overall, which has been slow to take up unionization and faced union-busting tactics when they do.

The agreement provides minimum salaries, sets restrictions on the use of outside contractors in bargaining unit positions and provides a minimum 2 percent annual raise for covered employees.
The Ringer and Gimlet Media unions have both ratified collective bargaining agreements with owner Spotify, the Writers Guild of America East announced Tuesday.
The three-year agreements covering writers and producers were unanimously ratified by Gimlet Media s 48 bargaining unit members and The Ringer s 65 bargaining unit members, per the WGA East. The agreement provides a $57,000 minimum salary at The Ringer (plus overtime) and a $73,000 minimum salary for associate producers at Gimlet Media, sets restrictions on the use of outside contractors in bargaining unit positions and provides a minimum 2 percent annual raise for covered employees.
Labor problems and class differences persist unaddressed while well-educated, white-collar workers focus on problems that are easier for their bosses to pretend to fix.
