Due to the pandemic, the state of Alaska didn’t do its annual crab survey, leaving crab fisherman to guess the best spots to fish when the season began last fall. In the season premiere now streaming on discovery+ and airing on the linear Discovery cable channel at 8 p.m. April 20th (the same day episode two premieres on discovery+) Sig Hansen tries to get the “Deadliest Catch” captains to pool information on where they find the crab. While soil temperatures are still somewhat cool, they will be creeping up, encouraging plants to grow and soil microbes to start their processes. One thing that is quickly taking shape are our forages. While we are not ready to graze or harvest yet, now is a great time to evaluate your stands, particularly alfalfa. The winter survival of alfalfa is affected by many factors including stand age, plant variety, soil pH and fertility, winter and fall moisture status, snow cover and cutting management during the previous fall. Signs of winter injury include slow green-up, uneven or asymmetrical growth of plants and root damage. Alfalfa buds can be especially affected by poor conditions, as are formed in the fall for spring growth. If buds are killed, the plant must form new ones in the spring, delaying growth and lowering first cutting yield. ....

Time was also spent inspecting aeration systems. Small-game hunters, archery deer hunters, and ATV operators were also checked. Various angling and ATV violations were encountered. CO Tim Gray (Bagley) checked ice anglers. CO Brice Vollbrecht (Bemidji #1) monitored ATV activity and ice anglers on area lakes. Vollbrecht also monitored trapping activity in the area. Upper Red lake was also worked several times. Fishing success has slowed on Upper Red Lake. Enforcement action was taken for unregistered ATVs, extra fishing lines, unattended lines, and being in possession of a small amount of marijuana. ....
