He called the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building a “hoax.” He said he “spanked” the governor of Michigan on several policy issues.
Those remarks captured in a video recording by members of the Hillsdale County Republican Party have drawn intense scrutiny around the state and country, but Michigan’s most powerful elected Republican, Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, is no stranger to controversy. ....

Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey speaks during a press conference on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021 in Lansing.
A group of women Michigan lawmakers is calling on Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey to relinquish his leadership role for his pattern of “degrading and disturbing” comments about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
The Michigan Progressive Women’s Caucus said Shirkey, R-Clarklake, should step down as Senate Majority Leader Thursday, citing his remarks in a video recorded by the Hillsdale County Republican Party where he dubbed the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack a “hoax,” said he’d thought about challenging Whitmer to a fistfight and boasted that he’d “spanked” her on a number of political issues. ....

Facts are stubborn things for Whitmer, Michigan GOP when it comes to COVID

To hear the governor tell it, Michigan is doing better than almost any state at administering the coronavirus vaccine, even though Republicans say the rollout is a “nightmare.” And Republicans are claiming that Whitmer’s COVID restrictions have “punished” the economy.
This isn’t new.
In May, Bridge Michigan raised questions about Whitmer’s claims that rural hospitals were nearly full (nope), the role of anti-Whitmer protests in spreading the virus (untrue), and Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joneigh Khaldun’s assertion that COVID restrictions would last into 2021 (well… on second thought.)
In that vein, here’s a look at a few assertions in the past few weeks that, at the very least, deserve some explanations. ....

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos from western Michigan submitted her resignation to President Trump on Thursday night, saying his administration’s accomplishments had been overshadowed by the Capitol riots, the Wall Street Journal reports.
After four years of ignoring Trump s abrasive behavior, did DeVos finally have a moment of conscience or did she take the coward s way out?
By stepping down with less than two weeks to go, the cabinet member no longer had to deal with the prospect of voting on the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.
In her resignation, she wrote of the riot: “That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation, and it is the inflection point for me.” ....
