Courtesy of the venue Gold /Smith Gallery is showing a selection of small paintings by Boothbay artist John Vander. The paintings are a distillation of summer itself. The artist says, “The works are mostly landscape based although some approach the completely abstract. They are not transcriptions of a place but memory images. I try to use the quality of paint, the energy of line to evoke the weather and the effect of light. Atmosphere is more important than subject.” Gold/Smith Gallery is at 8 McKown Street, Boothbay Harbor. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. These tours highlight the exhibition Art & Healing: Works by Jim Dine and Corita Kent in the museum’s Smith Gallery, as well as works from other current exhibitions, including Trimpin: Ambiente432 and Under the Same Sun and Moon: New Acquisitions from the Permanent Collection. Hannah Taylor `21 opened her show “Setting” on April 24, and Tommy G Lee `22’s show “Formal” is set to open on May 12. In regular years, students could walk in and out of Smith Gallery on their way to the Dining Hall, stepping in for a curious glance or spending more time perusing the walls of the small space and engaging with the frequently rotating exhibits. With many students still living off campus, the physical space of Smith Gallery located in the Joe Rosenfield Center (JRC) has closed its doors, but ....
