Convergence at People’s Park, celebrating the history and ingenuity of traditional fishing technologies.
It will involve sandblasting and engraving 16 pictographs and their Salish titles, created by tribal youth from the Wellpinit School District. Industrial Creations, Inc. will be on site doing the work, along with Thompson Moore. The piece is located on the south side of the Sandifur Memorial Bridge in Peaceful Valley.
Spokane Parks and Rec said the sculpture represents a fishing weir, which were built into the rivers to funnel the fish into areas where they were easier to trap. The Spokane River Gorge is where Native Americans, especially the Spokane Tribe, used weirs to help catch and cure hundreds of migrating salmon. ....

The governor’s announcement that Spokane County will stay in Phase 3 brought sighs of relief to some venues and artists. But many in the arts say it will do little to help the arts.
Most performing art groups have been completely shut down for the entirety of the pandemic, and have been holding out for Phase 4 of the governor’s re-opening plan. That, however, seems farther away than ever as the state rides a fourth wave of coronavirus cases. ....

This year was devastating for the arts and culture community, but there was brilliance among the wreckage

Jess Walter, left, and Emma Noyes
Let s be clear: 2020 absolutely sucked. For pretty much everyone. (I gather Jeff Bezos and some other billionaires did just fine, but I digress.) And it especially sucked for the arts community, a world that operates on a shoestring even during the best of times. We re obviously not close to the best of times, or even so-so times.
The national response to the pandemic when it comes to arts organizations, artists and businesses dedicated to the things that make life worth living concert halls, theaters, clubs, etc. is an embarrassment. Anyone wanting to make the case for Americans being an uncultured mob with no regard for anything but money need look no further than how we ve treated artists during the pandemic. I d love to say the state response was better, but Washington s support in terms of CARES Act funding aimed at the arts pales compared to many states. ....
