Covid-19 | Supreme Court advances summer vacation by a week due to surge in cases


The summer vacation will now begin on May 8 and end on June 27.
The Supreme Court on Monday decided to advance its summer vacation, which will now commence from May 8 in view of sudden surge in COVID-19 cases.
Chief Justice N V Ramana on his first working day held an emergent meeting with bar bodies including Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Supreme Court Advocates on Record Association (SCAORA) and Bar Council of India to take stalk of rising COVID situation.
Senior advocate and SCBA president Vikas Singh said that it has been decided in the emergent meeting that instead of May 14, the Summer Vacation will now commence from May 8 and would end on June 27 . ....

Spike in hate crime referrals after lockdown eased: charity

LONDON: The number of hate crime victims seeking support rose by more than a quarter in a week when lockdown restrictions in England were eased, according to charity figures.
Victim Support received 663 referrals, from the police and other agencies, of victims seeking help in the week starting March 29, up 30 per cent from the previous week.
It is a rise of 67 per cent compared to the average number of weekly referrals between the weeks starting January 6 and March 1. More than three-quarters of the referrals (514 – 78 per cent) involved offences linked to race or nationality.
This is a rise of 27 per cent from the previous week and up 73 per cent compared to the average between the weeks starting January 6 and March 1. ....

RSS warns against 'anti-Bharat' forces amid pandemic

In the midst of a massive second wave of COVID-19 infections hitting India, the RSS on Saturday appealed for caution against “destructive and anti-Bharat forces” who, it said, could exploit the situation to “create an atmosphere of negativity and distrust.”
RSS general secretary and second-in-command Dattatreya Hosabale released a statement which also asked the organisation’s workers, social and religious institutions to come forward to resolve current challenges. The second wave of the pandemic has left the country reeling under a large caseload and shortage of oxygen, hospital beds and medical supplies. ....

Covid refuses to slow down, 432 funerals in a single day | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: The number of Covid-protocol funerals in the city continues to spike, with the civic report stating that 432 such funerals took place on Wednesday till 7pm up from 193 on April 16. Over 410 Covid funerals were conducted on Tuesday, 357 on Monday and 290 on Sunday. A total of 1,947 Covid-protocol funerals have taken place in the six days since April 16.
The consistent rise means the crematoria in Mangolpuri, Dwarka and Subhash Nagar are running beyond their Covid-reserved capacity while the Panchkuian Road burning ghat is catering to almost double 27 instead of 15 Covid patients’ bodies daily. The rush has led to longer waiting times for grieving families. ....
