Critical Race Theory: The Latest 'Boogeyman' In Public Education

KUER
Supporters and protestors stand behind Ogden NAACP leader Betty Sawyer at a press conference on Critical Race Theory Wednesday.
Some educators in Utah are calling Critical Race Theory the latest “boogeyman” in public education.
It has become a loosely-defined, catch-all phrase some parents and state lawmakers have criticized as a threat to students across the state. The reaction is not unlike the one many people had to the introduction of
Common Core standards in the early 2010s.
Common Core was the
first major attempt to create a set of national school standards for K-12 students in language arts and mathematics. Before, states had their own standards, which varied by difficulty and expectation. ....

Bill updating health education in Utah schools voted down in House

| Updated: 1:12 a.m.
The Utah House voted down a bill Friday that would have updated how health education is taught in schools.
Before her fellow representatives made their decision, Carol Spackman Moss tried to dispel misinformation she said had been swirling around her bill and explained why she pushed for this legislation.
“I care deeply about the health and safety of our young people,” said the Democrat from Holladay, who’s a former teacher. “I think I fell short as a mother because I didn’t give the information that I might have given, had I had more education myself.” ....

Bill stuck in committee after lengthy discussion about how consent is taught in Utahs schools

| Updated: 5:27 p.m.
Rep. Carol Spackman Moss admitted to her fellow legislators Monday that she was “a little bit nervous” to start her presentation. It wasn’t because of the hundreds of emails she’d received about her bill. It was because her three daughters were watching.
It was their encouragement, their urging for her to “step up” to help prevent other people from experiencing the “horrible ordeal” their family went through, that helped her decide to file her bill in the first place.
Spackman Moss’s daughters were victimized as children, she told members of the House Education Committee. That is why the former teacher decided to sponsor a bill to update how consent is taught in Utah schools. ....

Teaching Consent
Democratic Rep. Carol Spackman Moss wants to make consent a part of Utah’s health education. Spackman Moss said that would give students the tools to protect themselves. Utah is an opt-in state, where parents have to sign off on their student’s health education. Dr. Kellie Woodfield, an OB-GYN at the University of Utah, said consent has to do with communication skills and boundary settings. “This concept of consent isn t limited to just sexual behavior, but actually encompasses a broader effort to teach children and adolescents about respecting the agency of others,” she said. “It’s so much more than refusal skills.” The bill received major pushback as many took issue with the description and expa ....
