SIR – In the 1960s, I worked for the industrial group of the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Its head, Sir Christopher Hinton, told staff that they would be subject to a pay freeze for five years. Many, myself included, left the authority, which thereafter was no longer at the forefront of developing atomic energy for industrial purposes.
The budget for the development programme, which concentrated on nuclear reactors for power generation, was slashed by the government of the day with no regard for the long-term implications that are now evident in our dependence on foreign resources (Leading Article, July 27).

May I share Howard Sounesâs disappointment with Clinton Heylinâs new biography of Bob Dylan (Report, 19 April). Like him, I was savaged by Heylin, in my case for writing âa pseudo-historical workâ, which sounds as if Iâd been taking tips from Donald Trump. Heylin appears to have been the first journalist to access Bob Dylanâs archive in Tulsa, and he doesnât seem to appreciate that his book potentially had the USP to top them all. Instead, he has attacked a host of fellow writers. I note that âHeylin declined to commentâ on your article, but a man with an ego as big as this is not going to let it lie.

I play a little guitar, write a few tunes, make a few movies, but none of that’s really me, ”George Harrison once said. “The real me is something else.” Harrison was many things – including a master of understatement. But he was right to point out that his true character remains elusive. He was one of the most famous men in the world, but he loathed superstardom. He preached piety and simple pleasures, yet he lived in a 120-room mansion and collected ultra high-end cars. His studious facade belayed a brilliant sense of humor, which led him to produce some of the greatest comedies of all time. The songs he wrote focused on both the glory of God and the petty annoyances of day-to-day life.
