With an off-day today, I figured we might take a look at the numbers put up by prospects in the Arizona farm system so far this year, and see who’s standing out. Note: this is based
entirely on the stats. As we all know, these can be affected by luck - a player can see his numbers boosted (or depressed) by balls dropping in, especially over a smaller sample size. There are also wide differences in environments across the farm system. The most obvious example is the dreaded “Reno effect,” which causes every hitter with the Aces to look like a the second coming of Ted Williams. As a guide, here’s a summary of the numbers put up at the plate by each of our affiliates.

The Diamondbacks Minor League affiliates combined for a 1-3 record, with Reno being the only team to pick up a win. All three of their losses came with the bullpen giving up late runs. Notable pitching prospects that took the mound were Ryne Nelson for Amarillo, Drey Jameson for Hillsboro, and Liam Norris for Visalia.
Top Pitching Performance: Reno RHPs Kevin McCanna and Ryan Weiss: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K
Top Hitting Performance: Visalia DH Elian Miranda: 2 for 4, GS (5), 7 RBI
Reno turned to a bullpen game for their strategy on the mound and it had a great early effect. Kevin McCanna would strike out 5 in the first three innings before giving way to Ryan Weiss, who continued the theme with 3 Ks in the 4th and 5th. That allowed Reno to build an early 4-0 lead on the strength of home runs. Drew Ellis opened the scoring off David Huff, hammering a 3-run homer off the southpaw in the 3rd

The Diamondbacks Minor League affiliates combined for a 3-1 record. Reno, Amarillo, and Hillsboro all picked up close wins thanks to good pitching early on and opportunistic offenses. Josh Green, Tommy Henry, and Slade Cecconi took the mound for their respective teams last night.

3 innings as his trusty sinker helped include 12 groundouts and 4 of them turning into double plays. He didn’t get much run support, but what he got ended up proving to be enough.
