How schools produce yearbooks during COVID - South Florida Sun-Sentinel

How do you put together a high school yearbook during COVID-19 when there's hardly anyone at school to interview or photograph? Most South Florida high schools have just a fraction of their normal attendance this year as the majority of kids are learning at home. Events that are yearbook staples have been canceled, including pep rallies, prom, senior nights and clubs. Yearbook staffs have had to be especially resourceful, since most of the staffers are working remotely too.

Graduations were nixed but Palm Beach County grad rates spiked

Even as campuses closed and traditional graduation ceremonies were called off, a record number of Palm Beach County high school seniors earned diplomas last year – aided in part by the statewide cancelation of standardized tests. The graduation rate rose to 90% for the first time both for the county’s public high schools and for the state overall, newly released state figures show. The county’s graduation rate of 90.2% was more than three points higher than the previous year and nearly eight points higher than four years beforehand. While graduation rates have risen significantly over the past decade, state officials said last year’s jump was due in large part to the canceling of mandatory state exams as the coronavirus began to rage across Florida.

The In-Crowd Movement brings opposing sides together

and last updated 2020-12-15 18:44:47-05 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — This year changed a lot of things. How we communicate and respond to pandemics, how our schools and universities operate and how we work. But 2020 also brought many divides to light: Issues on racial equality and policing, to name a few. There’s a little known movement in our area called The In-Crowd Movement that has been motivated by both the headlines and changes people in our area saw this year. It s a platform comprised of people on opposing sides moving forward. Close friends Steve West and Dr. Phillip M. Dukes, the co-founders of The In-Crowd, prepare for their first big meeting.
