DeWine says fairs are a go By Jacob Clary - [email protected] All fair activities will reopen if specific COVID-19 health orders are met, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced in a press release late Thursday. According to Stephanie McCloud, director of Ohio Department of Health, the orders will continue to be lifted if the situation improves, and if it worsens, more restrictions will be put in place. The order include fair-goers maintaining a 6-foot social distance from others, washing their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and as often as possible, or using hand sanitizer. They must also cover their coughs and sneezes into sleeves or elbows (not hands) and not shake hands, and fair personnel must consistently clean high-touch surfaces. ....

Mike DeWine announced Thursday that when Ohio gets to 50 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents for two straight weeks, all the health orders in the state will be removed. “Our path back is by each of us getting vaccinated when we can, and by each of us wearing masks in public,” DeWine said in a tweet. “While no one will be forced to take the vaccine, the more of us who are vaccinated, the more complete our victory, and the more confidently we can put this behind us.” ....
COVID-19 cases are dropping in county schools By Jacob Clary - [email protected] Superintendent Tim Davis said at this week’s Hillsboro Board of Education that masks and other COVID-19 measurements are working because the number of staff and students out of school due to the virus or being quarantined has dropped significantly. That appears to be the case across Highland County. According to the Ohio Department of Health School COVID-19 Reporting Dashboard, which was last updated Thursday: Bright Local Schools had one new student case this week and 19 cumulative student cases. It did not have any new staff cases and has had six total staff cases. ....
Local schools last on vaccine list By Tim Colliver - [email protected] The five Highland County public school districts, plus two parochial and one private school, are on Gov. Mike DeWine’s COVID-19 vaccination schedule for the week of Feb. 22. Bright Local, Fairfield Local, Greenfield Exempted Village, Hillsboro City and Lynchburg-Clay School districts are on the list of nearly 400 other schools for the last week of February, which also includes Hillsboro Christian Academy, St. Mary Catholic School and Stonewall Academy. The vaccines for Ohio K-12 schools have been scheduled for four consecutive weeks beginning Feb. 1, but Highland County schools are not scheduled until the fourth week. ....
