Watch Now: Amherst board favors referendum for voters to weigh in on marijuana dispensaries


With marijuana set to become legal in Virginia as of July 1, Amherst County Board of Supervisors members are backing a referendum for county residents to give input on whether dispensaries that sell the drug should be permitted.
The board discussed the matter during an April 6 meeting and directed County Administrator Dean Rodgers to look into pursuing a referendum “the sooner the better,” according to Supervisor Jimmy Ayers. When asked if the November general election is too soon to have such a referendum, County Attorney Mark Popovich said: “Absolutely not.”
Ayers, a former Amherst County sheriff who retired in late 2015, said he labels marijuana a “gateway drug” and he has seen firsthand what he described as damage it has done to local families. ....

Sinhala & Tamil New Year: Health guidelines to be issued today

The Ministry of Health stated that health guidelines issued in view of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year will be released today (02).
A special discussion was also held in this regard and the proposals made there will be further discussed.
The Health Promotion Bureau stated that this year s New Year festivities will be subject to restrictions.
Chief Epidemiologist at the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated that test to detect COVID-19 will be carried out targetting those employed in the trade zones and economic development zones leaving Colombo during the New Year season.
Meanwhile, a discussion was held yesterday between the Health Minister and the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka on the implementation of several new health development projects. ....

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahomans may soon by able to get cocktails to go, purchase liquor at a drive-thru window and use an automated machine to dispense wine and beer as part of series of measures that have cleared the state House.
The most controversial of these measures would allow retail spirit licensees to sell alcoholic beverages in an original sealed container via a drive-thru window. House lawmakers at first rejected the proposal, but hours later reversed course and passed it. ....
