In one 48-hour visit, I ventured 70m underground to the heart of Auckland s World War II defence effort - listening to a piano recital halfway down - zipped through the air faster than you re allowed to drive on the island, and star gazed with a group working hard to have Waiheke recognised for its dark skies. ....
Guided tours of Stony Batter tunnels on Waiheke Island recommenced late last year after a five-year break. Once shrouded in secrecy, this complex was the headquarters of Auckland’s defence network, built during World War II in response to the very real threat of a Japanese invasion. Hidden inside a hill at the far eastern end of Waiheke, it’s a true fortress: a system of long tunnels linking three gun emplacements, ammunition stores, operations and engine rooms. Decommissioned, and emptied of equipment in 1957, the tunnels were abandoned for more than 60 years, left dark and damp, littered with dead sheep and pūkeko, an unofficial adventure playground for locals. A community group worked hard on its restoration, but the Department of Conservation eventually closed the tunnels for safety reasons. ....
