Stoneham Historical Society recalls 1903 fire sparked by fireworks

From your friends at the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum Occasionally eagerly awaited annual outside holiday events are postponed or cancelled due to unexpected New England weather. Readers have experienced this disappontment most recently in anticipation of July 4th festivities.  After such a crazy year, everyone seemed to be anxiously awaiting these traditional summertime celebrations even more.  The archival boxes of fragile vintage issues of the Stoneham Independent are filled with stories of days gone by when weather and other circumstances sometimes caused huge unintentional consequences. Retired Chief Raymond Sorensen captured the essence of one such occasion in his book,  Stoneham s Great Fires and Tragic Events.

A Moment in Time: Stoneham bakery speaks to dedication, passion for profession

Courtesy of Stoneham Historical Society and Museum The pages of the Reference copy of Joanne Harriman s book Images of America - Stoneham are dog-eared, showing their many years of use. The book contains over 200 vintage photographs with descriptive text and selected by the author to show our historically rich town as it once was. Ms. Harriman dedicated her professional life to education and was keenly aware what a valuable teaching tool this book could become. After retirement, she shifted much of her time to volunteering at the Stoneham Historical Society & Museum serving on the Board of Directors in many capacities. She was affectionately known to many as the Unofficial Town Historian and never missed the opportunity to inspire visitors to the museum with her stories of days gone by. Her professional training and innate skills resulted in a timeless publication.
