A jury has unanimously found three Taranaki police officers not guilty of manslaughter. Following a little more than three hours of deliberation, the verdict in the case of Allen Ball s death was delivered just before 5pm on Thursday to resounding gasps of relief. It can now be revealed the officers were Corey Steven Waite, 28, Craig Michael Longworth, 43, and Sandra Ilene Shaw. Before the verdicts were delivered, the officers were visibly emotionally and held one another as they stood in the dock. ....

The Crown’s case in the trial of three Taranaki police officers accused of manslaughter will continue into a third week. On Friday, the second week of the trial came to an end and lead prosecutor Cherie Clarke confirmed there were further witnesses to call, which will happen on Monday. That should close the prosecution’s evidence and then defence counsel will be invited to call witnesses, which could see the trial enter a fourth week. The officers, who have name suppression until verdict, were charged following the death of Allen Ball in a cell at Hāwera police station in the early hours of June 1, 2019. ....
